Three letters that add legitimacy to your website / internet business
What does every Fortune 500 business have in common? What does every publicly traded business have that most home-based internet businesses lack?
Three letters at the end of their name:
- Inc
or
- LLC
Some people think that incorporating costs too much money or too much paperwork. This belief simply does not conform to the facts.
You can incorporate or form an LLC online, without ever visiting a lawyer or a government office, for less than $200 + state filing fees.
The ongoing record-keeping and paperwork, particularly for an LLC, is minimal. You'll file much more paperwork getting a line of credit from your supplier than you will incorporating your business.
Besides, if you don't have confidence to invest a few hundred dollars in incorporating your business, how do you expect the rest of the world to spend tens of thousands of dollars on your product or service?
WholesalingFor example, most legitimate wholesalers won't do business with retailers that aren't incorporated and who don't have sales tax ID numbers. Real wholesalers--not phony middlemen with marked-up prices pretending to be wholesalers--don't want to waste their time with flaky individuals who will open an account, sell 2 items on Ebay and then give up.
It's a waste of time for them. One way that wholesalers weed out the non-serious folks is to only do business with corporations or LLCs. If a person isn't willing to invest a few dollars to incorporate, then they probably won't invest the time and money to market and sell products in any significant number.
Wholesalers always require a sales tax ID number, because without it, they must collect and remit sales tax. People who neglect doing their legal paperwork upfront will end up having to use middlemen and not true wholesalers.
If you're serious about your internet business venture, you should seriously consider incorporating your business by forming an LLC. An LLC is relatively inexpensive to form, the annual paperwork is minimal, and the boost it gives to your business's image is priceless.
