Review of Bizfilings

Bizfilings is another heavyweight in the online incorporation business. They have been doing online incorporations for 10 years, and have formed over 150,000 new corporations and LLCs during that time.

Overall Impressions

Pluses:

  • Slightly lower prices than some competitors
  • Toll-free number and Live Help online for good customer service
  • A reliable incorporator--over 150,000 incorporations completed

Minuses:

  • You are forced to open a customer account when you purchase--yet another username and password to remember
  • No guarantee if your corporate veil is pierced

Overall: An excellent alternative to the Company Corporation. Bizfilings is slightly less expensive, but still as reliable as their competition.

Figuring out how to order is pretty simple--there is a large blue "order" button on the middle of their homepage.

Bizfilings Order

Before we order, however, let's look at pricing:

Bizfilings Pricing

Bizfilings is slightly less expensive than the Company Corporation. The least expensive package, called the Basic package is $130 + state fees.

This package includes the minimum of what you need to form your LLC, except for obtaining your EIN.

Unlike some other incorporators, bizfilings splits up EIN service into 2 parts. For $25, they will fill out your form SS-4 for you. For an additional $45, they will actually file that form with the IRS and obtain your EIN. When all is said and done with the EIN, it costs $70 to have Bizfilings take care of the entire EIN obtainment process. This is competitive with Company Corporation, who charges $75. However, you can file the EIN yourself here, using these instructions.

As far as customer service, Bizfilings has a great service called Live Help. Live Help is basically being able to have an instant message conversation with a customer service representative. Look for the Live Help icon below.

If you're not into instant messaging, you can talk to a real person on the phone at 800-981-7183.

I used Bizfilings several years ago to form an LLC, and the process was simple and smooth. Your experience should be no different.

When you're actually ready to order, you'll go to a relatively simple page where you select your state and entity. In this case, I chose an LLC in Missouri.

One aspect I like about Bizfilings' order page is that they break out the state filing fees from their charges--$135 in state fees (Missouri, in this example) and $310 in Bizfilings' fees for a standard limited liability formation.

One aspect that slightly annoyed me was that during the order process you're asked to create a new customer account.

Bizfilings Signup

This isn't a deal breaker for me, but it's yet another password and username combination I have to remember. I must have hundreds of these things floating around. It'd be nice if internet companies could let you buy their product or service without having to create a whole separate account. It's like when Radio Shack used to ask for your phone number every time you made a purchase.

All packages automatically include six months of free Registered Agent service and Bizcomply. While LLCs have fewer ongoing corporate housekeeping activities as a C-corporation, many states do have annual report requirements. Bizcomply, a service of Bizfilings, keep track of these dates for you. This is particularly useful if you have many LLCs, for example if you are a real estate investor and separately incorporate each of your properties (a very good idea). Bizcomply costs $50/yr and is a good purchase. If you're a very organized person and are confident tracking these dates on your own, then you can save $50. If you use bizfiling's registered agent service, Bizcomply is free. Registered agent service costs $129/yr.

My suggestion is, if you're forming your LLC in the state where your business is located, to be your own registered agent, and pay $50 for Bizcomply. The only circumstance where I'd advise a registered agent service in your own home state is if you have some reason for wanting privacy. Because the registered agent address of every LLC is part of the public record, you might want to keep your address private, and paying $129/yr for registered agent service would be worth it.
